How to stand out to a potential next employer

How to make yourself stand out at interview and on your CVWhat defines you as a person? If you think about it we spend so many hours of our lives at work, 38 hours a week over a year equals to 1,976 hours a year we are at work. I speak to Social Workers & Nurses everyday who want to make a difference in the work they do and are passionate about their work but when it comes to their resume or interviews they just don’t sell themselves well.My top tips for promoting yourself well in your resume and at interview are as follows;Update your resumeHave personal profile at the top of your CV, this is your chance to sell to the reader who you are as a person, what experience you have, for how long and what you’re looking for in your next role. If you have more than a paragraph, then do a cover letter.Add Qualifications – add year completed and universities you studied in and any short courses or certificates too.Work Experience – List each job you have worked in and make sure the dates all match up. Ensure there are no gaps ideally and put a month and year, to and from for each job and ensure you put bullet points or short paragraph to really promote yourself and what you achieved in each role.These simple changes can make your CV stand out and really shows anyone reading your CV your skills, experience and who you are as a person.How to be your best in an Interview;Be prepared, plan your journey to get to the interview the night before to allow plenty of time and not rush to the interview.Read up on the organisation values and mission on their website – refer to this in the interview and mention “on your website I noticed one of your values is…” and describe how that aligns with your values too.Read the position description and have a few questions to ask at the end of the interview.Make sure you answer any questions with well thought out responses as its tempting to over talk your answers if you’re nervous.Dress for Success – As they say dress for the job you want not the job you have got. Even if you feel overdressed that is better than being underdressed.Remember to smile and be confident in your interview there is a reason you were chosen for the interview so be proud and don’t hold back, you only get one shot to make your best first impression.I hope these tips help you in preparing for your next interview and help you with updating your CV too.
