Congratulations if you’re reading this you have probably just landed yourself your new dream job. You have now handed in your notice at your current workplace. Naturally, you might also be nervous about your first week in your new role. Here are my top tips on how to make a good impression on your first week in your new job.Plan your route and timings for getting to work; There is a lot to worry about on your first day so plan ahead and work out the bus or train timetable or driving route. Give yourself time to arrive 20min early than scheduled. That way you have room for delays and if you’re early why not get a coffee from your local coffee shop to your new workplace to start your day with an energy boost.Do your research on the organisation and the team you will be working with; Look into the company, culture and philosophies to get a good idea of the way they work. Observe the team and the way they interact over the first week so you can work out where you can fit in.Don’t be afraid to ask questions; Prior to starting your role don’t be afraid to ask questions around dress code and wear clothes that suit. If in doubt dress conservatively & any other concerns you have prior to starting an email or speak to the manager to put your mind at ease.Take lots of notes; In your first week you will be flooded with new information so take notes where ever possible so that you don’t have to ask again and again what to do and feel independent in your role more quickly too.Listen and observe those around you: Be a sponge and soak up as much information as you can and be sure to learn as much as you can about the company and how it all works.Find the right people to help you learn and develop; Your new team will be eager for you to start and often there are people within the team that are willing to share their knowledge with new staff. So quickly work out who is the best person to connect with and learn from them as much as possible.Get involved in team projects to show you’re a team player & Always be looking for ways to help your manager & colleagues; When you’re a new member to any team a key skill that any employer is looking for is a team player. While you’re learning offer to help wherever possible your new teammates. If you’re unsure what you can do at different times ask your manager for more things to do or what they would like you to do now. This shows you’re proactive and team player!Be positive & Be confident; Last but not least go into your new job being positive and confident. If you don’t feel that way naturally make a conscious effort to be positive and optimistic you will attract others around you to want to get to know you and hopefully help you settle into your new role quicker too.I’m sure there are plenty more tips you can come up with too. What are your top tips for your first week in your new job?
